United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Canada, Local 1991P members working at Semex in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., ratified their first collective agreement on April 25.

“The new collective agreement improves job compensation and security and will provide an excellent level of working conditions for the members working at Semex in the Montérégie region,” said Mario Maisonneuve, UFCW Local 1991P president.

The contract covers 35 employees who work as laboratory technicians at the company. Semex specializes in the development and marketing of bull semen for breeding in the cattle and dairy industries. 

Some of the gains achieved in the first contract include an hourly wage rate increase from $19 to $25, new group-insurance premiums to be paid by the employer, the addition of six paid sick leave days and a pension plan contribution of five per cent by the employer, said the union.
