Lindsay, Ont., Nordia workers join steelworkers union

Fourth group to join USW

Employees of the Nordia call centre in Lindsay, Ont. voted to join the United Steelworkers (USW) union.

A majority of employees — 71 per cent — voted in favour of joining the USW, rejecting an anti-union campaign waged by the company over several weeks, according to the union. One hundred and eleven employees work at the call centre for the Quebec-based company.

The Lindsay employees are the fourth group of Nordia workers who have agreed to become a part of USW, joining workers in Kitchener, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, Que. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Bell Canada, Nordia operates call centres that provide services to Bell customers.

"Nordia Lindsay employees voted to join the Steelworkers after seeing what their unionized colleagues have at other sites: a productive relationship with management based on collective agreements that ensure fairness and equal treatment for everyone," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario director.
