Peterborough, Ont. (120 janitors, production employees, shipper/receivers, blenders, technicians, millwrights, electricians, mechanics) and the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 175

Renewal agreement: Effective Nov. 16, 2017, to Aug. 31, 2021. Signed on Nov. 16, 2017.
Shift premium: $1.75 per hour for work between 11 p.m. and midnight on Sunday. $1 per hour for work after 3 p.m. and before 7:30 a.m. on following day. $2.75 per hour for employee who is appointed as acting chief refrigeration operator.
Paid holidays: 11 days, plus 1 floating day. 
Vacations with pay: 2 weeks or 4% after 1 year, 3 weeks or 6% after 5 years, 4 weeks or 8% after 10 years, 5 weeks or 10% after 20 years, 6 weeks or 12% after 30 years. 
Overtime: Time and one-half for all work after 8 hours per day, double time after 12 hours per day. Time and one-half for all work on Saturday, double time for all work on Sunday. 
Medical benefits: Employer pays almost 100% of premiums (less weekly deductible).
Dental: 100% reimbursement, maximum $3,000 per year (previously $2,000 per year). Maximum $3,000 orthodontic benefit for dependent children. 
Vision: $300 for each person covered, every 24 months.
Weekly indemnity: Employer pays almost 100% of premiums for weekly coverage of 66 2/3% of earnings, maximum $1,000.
Sick leave: One-half day per month of service; 7 days after 1 year of service. Employees will receive payout of 80% of balance of accrued sick/personal leave by March 1 of following year; 100% for employees who have at least 6 unused days. 
LTD: 66 2/3% of regular rate, maximum $2,000 per month. 
Life insurance: Employer pays almost 100% of premiums for coverage of $40,000.
Pension: Employer will contribute $1.45 per hour (previously $1.25 per hour) to trust fund of Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan, maximum 2,000 hours per year.
Bereavement leave: 5 days for death of spouse, common-law spouse, mother, father, child, stepchild. 3 days for death of brother, sister, stepfather, stepmother, grandmother, grandfather, grandchildren, mother-in-law, father-in-law. 2 days for death of brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law. 1 day for death of aunt, uncle, niece, nephew.
Seniority – recall rights: 24 months. 
Call-in pay: Time and one-half regular hourly rate or 4 hours of work at regular rate, whichever is greater.
Probationary period: 640 hours within 6 consecutive months. 
Discipline: Sunset clause is 12 months for verbal or written warning; 18 months for more severe disciplinary action. 
Severance: 1 week’s pay for each year of service with less than 5 years of service; 2 weeks’ pay for each year of service after 5 years of service, maximum 32 weeks.
Safety shoes: $180 per year (previously $140 per year).
Uniforms/clothing: $180 per year (previously $140 per year) to employees in shipping and full-time material handlers for freezer wear. Employer will purchase 4 jackets per year for use in easer/filler. Company will provide freezer jacket, pants, insulated gloves, toque, neck warmer, fleece under-liner.
Tool allowance: Maintenance department employee (with at least 1 year’s seniority) will receive $300 gift card during first week of January each year, for replacement of worn-out or lost tools or purchase of new tools.

Editor’s notes: Education fund: Employer will contribute $0.03 per hour per employee to UFCW, Local 175 Education and Training Fund. Cellphone holder: Refrigeration operators carrying cellphone will be paid $25 for each 8-hour period, or portion thereof, plus call-in pay, if called in. Death benefit: Employer will gift 3 months’ pay to surviving estate when death of active employee occurs. Education: Upon successful completion (pass) of workplace-related educational course, preapproved by employer, employee will be reimbursed 50% of tuition cost, maximum $200 per year.
