Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) members working for the National Battlefields Commission (NBC) in Quebec City reached a tentative agreement with their employer and returned to work on July 18.

The agreement brought an end to a strike that had been happening since June 25, says the union.

“The determination shown by this small group of 59 members is exemplary. They have succeeded in establishing a strong balance of power thanks to their ingenious methods in applying pressure,” says Yvon Barrière, PSAC regional vice-president for Quebec.

The group obtained an average salary increase of 22 per cent, bringing them one step to closer to closing the wage gap between them and those in their industry, says the union.

Among the list of 30 gains obtained by NBC employees, some highlights include the partial repatriation of snow-removal contracts, the control of subcontracting and employment agencies and the creation of new permanent full-time positions. Also, the new five-year contract ends the disparity in treatment between students and other employees, says PSAC.

NBC employees had been without a contract since Oct. 31, 2017. The workers are responsible for reception, interpretation and guide services, as well as the general maintenance of the Plains of Abraham and its museum.
