The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) — the union representing more than 65,000 registered nurses and health-care professionals as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates — on Oct. 23 welcomed 29 nurses from ParaMed home health care Muskoka in Huntsville, Ont. to the union.

“The (nurses) joined ONA through the card-certification process; as home-care providers, they are eligible under Bill 148 to do so, rather than having to hold a formal vote,” said Vicki McKenna, ONA president.

The card-check system may improve the gender-wage gap, making it easier for other home-care providers to join a union and narrow that gap, said McKenna.

ONA represents more than 65,000 registered nurses and health-care professionals, as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
