River Rock Casino employees vote to join BCGEU

Union expects to begin bargaining in February

Employees at River Rock Casino in Vancouver recently voted to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU/NUPGE).

The workers voted 96 per cent in favour of joining the union. The new certification — to be issued by the Labour Relations Board — will be comprised of 700 workers including dealers, slot attendants, supervisors, guest services, cashiers and count team members.

BCGEU represents the majority of unionized casinos in B.C. River Rock Casino is the largest casino in the province.

“We are very happy with the tremendous support our new members have shown us,” said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith.

“We will be electing a bargaining committee, electing stewards and meeting with members to get their input for bargaining proposals.”

The union said it expects the new bargaining committee will be at the table by late February to negotiate its first agreement with Great Canadian Casinos.
