Strike ends at Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer in Cornwall, Ont.

Negotiations for next deal begin in 18 months: UFCW

United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 1006A members working at Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer (YIG) in Cornwall, Ont., voted to end a 12-week labour dispute by accepting the latest company offer on Feb. 20.

Improvements over the previous employer offer include an immediate six-per-cent increase for top rate part-time workers. The contract term was also shortened from six to three years, meaning the employees will be able to negotiate further improvements in 18 months, said the union.

“The Baxtrom’s members have shown incredible courage and solidarity over three cold winter months in their fight for fairness,” said Roland Lapins, UFCW Canada Local 1006A regional director.

Baxtrom’s YIG is a franchise of Loblaw Companies.
