Toronto GoodLife personal trainers unionize

But fitness instructors not in favour of joining WUCC

GoodLife Fitness personal trainers in Toronto have voted to unionize — however, group fitness instructors did not follow suit.

An Application for Certification was filed earlier this year by the Workers’ United Canada Council, and when ballots were counted at the Ontario Labour Relations Board, personal trainers voted 181 in favour, 116 against, while the fitness instructors voted 147 in favour, 305 against.

The two groups were separated into two different bargaining units because of the significant differences in the nature of their work, and the fact that many fitness instructors teach in multiple club locations across a wide geographical area as opposed to personal trainers in Toronto who work for one club location only, said the company.

“The most important thing for us is to continue to have a positive and collaborative relationship with all of our employees,” said Jane Riddell, GoodLife Fitness COO. “This is new territory for us, but we are confident that we will be able to work together with our employees to create a healthy and successful future for all.”

“Our hope is that the new union will share our vision of prioritizing a culture of caring, integrity and open communication,” said David ‘Patch’ Patchell-Evans, GoodLife founder and CEO. “We are committed to continuing to provide a healthy and supportive work environment, as well as focusing on consistently becoming better with the feedback and input of our employees.”
