UFCW members at Kapta ratify new contract in Quebec

Wage increases in each of five years of deal

United Food and Commercial Workers' Union (UFCW) Canada Local 501 members working at Kapta in Notre-Dame-des-Pins, Que., have ratified a new collective agreement.

The five-year contract — which was approved by 92 per cent of the bargaining unit — came into effect in Nov. 2016 and will run through July 2021, according to the union.

Kapta manufactures display stands — such as merchandising units and advertising posters — and also provides digital printing for store banners and signage.

The new agreement brings many gains to workers including:

  • wage increases of 4.3 per cent upon signing the agreement, and 2.5 per cent per year thereafter.
  • a new employer contribution of $0.18 per hour per worker to the UFCW Quebec Dental Care Plan as of Nov. 2016
  • skills bonuses that are less arbitrary and easier to access
  • increased seniority protection from 30 to 36 months for accident or illness
  • an employer contribution to the FTQ Solidarity Fund

“Negotiations were harmonious, and the members were able to maintain acquired benefits and improve their working conditions,” said Daniel Nadeau, local UFCW 501 director for eastern Quebec.
