Workers at Ace Bakery in Toronto join UFCW

OLRB helped in certification vote: Union

About 260 workers at Ace Bakery in Toronto voted to join United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 175 Aug. 23.

The Ace Bakery workers joined after reaching out to UFCW in order to obtain fair wages and respect and dignity at work, said the union.

“The ACE Bakery workers were extremely organized, passionate, and engaged in their effort to join the union, and that is why this campaign succeeded,” said Shawn Haggerty, president of UFCW Canada Local 175.

Prior to the certification vote, the employer attempted to add more than 100 workers from outside the bargaining unit to the employee list. However, the union challenged this move with the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the bakery workers succeeded in their push to join the union, according to UFCW.

The ACE workers join many other UFCW Local 175 members who work in the bakery industry, including members at Maplehurst Bakeries, Silverstein’s Bakery, and Ready Bake Foods, among others.

UFCW Canada Local 175 represents more than 70,000 Ontarians.
