General strike hobbles Greece

National 24-hour strike over pension legislation affects schools, transportation, government, TV and radio stations, airlines and tourist sites.

The government has backed off its proposed sweeping pension reforms, but workers throughout Greece are taking a day off in protest anyway.

Last week, the Socialist government outlined reforms to prevent many pension funds from going bankrupt. Greeceā€™s powerful unions went into action and forced the government to stay its hand.

The government wanted to make pension cuts and increase the minimum retirement age to 65. It now says everything is open to discussion.

The country is in turmoil today as workers walked off the job in most sectors including transportation, journalism, tourism and education.
