Mike Cass elected president of BC HRMA

Association seeing growth in membership, metrics service

Mike Cass was elected president of the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association (BC HRMA) at the association’s annual general meeting in June. Cass was president-elect and is also director of human resources at Island Timberlands, a forestry company based in Nanaimo, B.C.

Outgoing president Jay-Ann Fordy provided an overview of the status of the association, highlighting a few key achievements of the past year:

  • Membership growth occurred in all regions and reached a total of 5,179.
  • More than 60 per cent of voting members hold the certified human resources professional (CHRP) designation.
  • BC HRMA scored a 76 per cent satisfaction rating in its annual member survey.
  • The HR Metrics Service had significant growth and now has 65 participating organizations across Canada.
  • Average attendance and positive evaluation results increased for professional development programming.

Fordy also spoke about the outcomes from the board’s strategic planning meeting in January 2011. The board has identified three targets: raising the profile of HR in the business community with assistance from a public relations firm; building business-to-business partnerships across Western Canada; and continuing excellence in CHRP accreditation.

Updates to the strategic vision included:

Mandate: Promote and enhance the professional designation and advance member value.
Vision: Be recognized as “the place” for leading people practices.
Mission: Keep people first in the decisions of leaders.
