Teachers should receive more P.D. days: Report

1 day every 2 weeks recommended

Teachers in Prince Edward Island should be receiving more training throughout the school year, according to a report by the Education Governance Commission.

The report outlines 48 recommendations including the government set aside more time in the school year calendar to allow more professional development for teachers. Currently, five days throughout the school years are set aside for teachers’ learning and development and children get the day off school.

"It's insufficient," commission co-chair Bill Whelan told CBC. "Those jurisdictions where professional development is embedded, ongoing on a regular basis in the school calendar, students in those jurisdictions do much better."

The report recommends the government devote one-half day every week for teachers’ professional development or one day every two weeks. But it’s important not to lose instructional time so either school days would need to be extended or the school year would have to be longer, said Whelan.
