Labour market ‘far from ideal but getting more optimistic’: HRIA

The Hiring Confidence Index (HCI) for Alberta overall has improved from six months ago, with professional, scientific and technical services seeing a slight increase in the index, according to the semi-annual Alberta HR Trends survey by the Human Resources Institute of Alberta (HRIA).
The expectation of hiring levels in Alberta over the next six months and the confidence in finding the right people to fill vacancies both increased. There was a significant increase in the number of employers in the public administration and government sector that expect to grow the size of their workforce.
“Thirty-one per cent of overall number of organizations expect positive growth to hiring levels. The labour market is still far from ideal but getting more optimistic as we move into a recovery from the recession,” said HRIA's director of research, Daniel Boucher, citing the survey of 856 respondents.
“Sixty-seven per cent of survey respondents indicated in Alberta that they are confident they can find the right people. This the highest level of confidence human resources professionals in Alberta have indicated since the release of the HCI Index in 2013. Overall throughout Western Canada, 61 per cent of organizations are confident they can find qualified individuals.”
