$3 million donation to support training and development of pharmacy students at the Université de Montréal
The largest generic drug maker in Canada has dropped $3 million into the lap of the Université de Montréal to enhance the school’s training of pharmacists.
Apotex’s senior vice-president, Michael Spino, said it’s important for Canadian companies to step up to the plate and support their own.
“I think that Canada is short-sighted in the context of not recognizing that the future growth of Canada depends on the future growth of Canadian companies, not foreign-owned multinationals that set up a house here and do a small part of their network there,” Spino told the Montreal Gazette. “Right now, Apotex has a $600 million growth program for new facilities and new research-and-development capacity so it can manufacture for the whole world products coming from Canada.”
The $3 million donation is the largest training donation the faculty of pharmacy has ever received. The money will be used to help support a new apprenticeship program where students spend time working with experienced pharmacists.
In return, the university is naming a room after Apotex in the Jean Coutu centre for pharmacy and research that is being built on the campus.
