Province gives Keyano College $6.1 million
The Alberta government is giving a Fort McMurray, Alta., college $6.1 million to help meet the demand for apprenticeship training.
The number of apprenticeship technical training spaces at Keyano College has increased from 526 in 2002 to 872 in 2007. The college will use about $4.5 million of the provincial funding to create an additional 250 apprenticeship spaces.
The college will use the money to convert an existing shop into a steamfitter-pipefitter facility. It will also purchase new and modern equipment as well as portable classrooms to increase capacity.
This investment will benefit occupations such as process operators, mine operators and power engineers, and apprentices such as heavy equipment technicians, carpenters, millwrights and electricians.
“The Alberta economy continues to be strong, which is creating countless opportunities for skilled tradespeople. There’s no better time for investing in facilities to help train apprentices,” said Premier Ed Stelmach.
The remaining $1.6 million will go toward replacing the roof on Keyano College’s Clearwater Campus facility.
