National unemployment rate dips to 7.1 per cent

Following two months of little change, the unemployment rate edged down 0.1 percentage points to 7.1 per cent as employment increased by an estimated 43,000 in September, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

Over the first nine months of 2004, employment has grown by one per cent (156,000 jobs) while hours worked have increased 2.1 per cent.

All of the gains so far in 2004 have been in full-time jobs (up 229,000) while the number of part-time jobs has fallen by 74,000.
