There are signs the economy is improving and some employers that laid off workers in the past year are looking to rehire. But many employees will be wary of returning to their former workplaces, said Katherine Vanderberg, principal of HR consulting firm Feldman Daxon Partners in Toronto.

“In my 20 years of doing this work, I’ve never seen anybody go back to a former employer,” she said. “They’re ready to move on after they’ve gotten the news.”

However, Warren Lundy, a partner at Feldman Daxon Partners, the Canadian offices of Nashville-based OI Partners, has seen more employees return on contract or as consultants as a way to “test the ground.”
