For employees facing complex health issues, uncertainty can be a major source of stress. A new diagnosis, an invasive or unclear treatment plan, or persistent symptoms without answers can lead to confusion, fear, and delayed decision-making.

To support employees during these critical moments, employers are increasingly making investments in trusted services that provide clarity and direction to their workforce.

That’s where second medical opinion programs are gaining renewed attention. Previously available to only a select few, they’re now being revisited as a strategic employee health benefit — particularly when backed by strong clinical outcomes and trusted experts.

Second medical opinion services not only improve care decisions, they also contribute to employee trust in their benefits, which can improve satisfaction and retention.

According to data from Teladoc Health Canada, 57% of second opinion cases led to a revised diagnosis, while 79% resulted in a different treatment plan. Among employees who accessed a second opinion, 96% have followed up on their personalized recommendations or plan to do so. For employers, that translates into real impact, not just for individual health, but for workforce stability and long-term costs.

A patient’s perspective: I was ‘trying to get some answers’

The impact of second opinions is best understood through the experience of someone who has been there.

Lisa had been struggling with a complex back issue that had been limiting her activity for years. The impact of the condition on her long-term health was unknown and was causing additional stress.

Through her employer’s benefit plan, Lisa accessed Teladoc Health Canada’s Expert Medical Opinion service. She was guided through the process and, after having her case reviewed by two specialists, she received a diagnosis and recommended treatment plan — one that Lisa is following successfully.

Lisa now has peace of mind and is able to live her life on her terms again.

“I was taken seriously,” she says. “Getting a second opinion gave me confidence that      there were some issues, but they were not life-threatening.”

Clarity improves care — and culture

According to Statistics Canada[1], musculoskeletal disorders, mental health concerns, and chronic illness are among the leading causes of long-term disability. These conditions often require complex, time-sensitive decisions, and when employees feel unsure, delays or disengagement often follow. This can affect not only their well-being but also their ability to engage in work.

“From a patient perspective, having a renowned expert opinion not only helps them feel confident in their diagnosis but also assists them in choosing the best treatment options to meet their personal needs,” said Dr. Lydia Hatcher, M.D., CCFP, FCFP, CHE, D-CAPM and a trusted specialist in the Expert Medical Opinion program.

“Having the information presented in an evidence-informed manner leads to faster recovery and earlier return to work.”

As health challenges grow more complex, it's increasingly clear that second opinions shouldn't be optional — they should be a standard part of employee care. Employers have an opportunity to lead the way, ensuring their workforce feels supported and confident in their health decisions when it matters most.
