WorkSafeNB and CRA to share employer details

Information-sharing agreement will reduce fraud, deadbeat employers

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and New Brunswick's workers' compensation board have entered into an information-sharing agreement to reduce fraud and decrease the likelihood of employers not paying their fair share.

WorkSafeNB and the CRA signed a memorandum of understanding that allows the organizations to share employer registration information. This will help the organizations identify employers that are registered with one organization but not the other.

The information will also be used to determine if an employer should be paying both assessment premiums to WorkSafeNB as well as income tax and harmonized sales tax to the CRA.

The agreement will ensure everyone contributes equally towards government programs and services, said William Baker, commissioner of the CRA.

Compliance with both organizations is mandatory for most employers. If employers aren't registered, but should be, they may be charged backdated premiums and penalties.
