19 per cent of employees work through lunch

Too much work to take a break

A study of 700 American employees of OfficeTeam, an international staffing firm, reveals that one in five eats lunch at his or her desk every day, while 43 per cent do so at least once a week. The reason is that they feel they have too much work to do to take a lunch break.

However, Diane Domeyer, OfficeTeam’s executive director, stated in a Chicago Tribune article that this effort may be self-defeating. Without taking a break, you may be too tired in the afternoon to get much work done.

Domeyer also warned that eating at your desk can affect your professional image. If you talk with your mouth full, spill all over your papers or computer, and allow the odor of your lunch to waft through the office, others may be offended.

There are also social benefits from eating with colleagues or clients. You may not be seen as a team player if you don’t join others for a meal.
