Blue is the happiest collar

Britain's blue-collar workers have higher job satisfaction and work-life balance than white-collar workers: survey

Beauty might not be everything, but it sure makes people happy, especially those who make others beautiful for a living.

Beauticians are the happiest workers in the United Kingdom, according to a survey of job satisfaction.

Nearly all of the beauticians surveyed (95 per cent) said the ability to meet lots of new people contributed to their happiness and 90 per cent said that feeling appreciated made them happy at work.

While beauticians are happy helping others achieve outer perfection, those who help people beautify their souls, the clergy, came in second in the survey of 1,300 employees conducted by City and Guilds.

Florists, hairdressers and chartered engineers are also at the top of the job satisfaction list. However, their white-collar counterparts such as pharmacists, lawyers, civil servants and IT specialists are the most unhappy with their jobs.

More than half (55 per cent) said feeling stressed topped the list of reasons they were unhappy in their jobs, while 35 per cent said that feeling underpaid made them unhappy at work.

The top five jobs with good work-life balance are all vocational with music DJs coming in first, with a work-life balance rating of 6.7 out of 10, followed by beauticians (6.6) and chefs (6.4).

Overall, blue-collar workers rated their work-life balance a 5.2 out of 10, while white-collar workers ranked their work-life balance a 4.5.
