Honey, I packed the laptop, did you grab the sunscreen?

Over one-third of Canadians heading for cottage country take work with them

Long considered the savior of corporate Canada’s weary, the cottage, that quintessential Canadian haven of relaxation, is changing. It may no longer be the relaxing retreat from the daily grind that it once was.

According to a Netscape Canada/Leger Marketing survey of 1,585 Canadians, 36 per cent of those heading off to the cottage this summer will be packing work alongside their cooler, swim suit and sunscreen.

In the struggle for work-life balance it seems this change is not entirely unwelcome.

The survey indicated that 26 per cent of the Canadians polled would prefer to work remotely from the cottage if only they had access to a sufficient Internet connection.

Therein lies the challenge – while many cottagers are prepared for barbequing, swimming and boating they aren’t currently wired for business.

Forty-eight per cent of Canadians have wanted to go online while at the cottage but were unable to and 53 per cent of those polled said that a high-speed dial-up Internet service would be convenient at the cottage.
