Male bosses preferred: Indian survey

Many believe women have limited access to senior positions

When choosing who they would prefer as a boss, most workers in India prefer a man over a woman, according to a new survey.

The survey of 407 workers in eight Indian cities by staffing firm TeamLease, found 45 per cent of respondents prefer a man to call the shots at work while 24 per cent prefer a female boss.

Most of the respondents currently work for a male boss.

All respondents in Bangalore and Ahmedabad feel that a woman has limited access to senior-level opportunities and only 12 per cent of respondents in Bangalore feel women make better bosses than men.

In Chennai, 58 per cent of respondents feel men have a better chance of getting ahead in the workplace and, despite having the highest number of women bosses, 54 per cent of respondents in Mumbai feel the same way.

The most liberal respondents were in Delhi, where the majority say being a woman doesn't limit a worker's ability to climb the corporate ladder. In Pune, 70 per cent of respondents say they don't care if their bosses are male or female and that only their abilities matter.
