Minimum wage to rise May 1, 2011

$9.65 per hour, $8.35 for those earning tips

Quebec’s minimum wage will rise 15 cents May 11, 2011, to $9.65 per hour, according to the ministry of labour. And employees earning tips will see their wage rise 10 cents to $8.35 per hour.

While the economic situation is still precarious, it made sense to raise the wage to improve the buying power of workers with modest revenues, said Minister of Labour Lise Thériault. It’s a complex exercise, to improve the wages of workers while maintaining the competitiveness of employers, she said.

But the Quebec government has found it’s possible to improve the financial situation of vulnerable workers while also encouraging economic development in the province, said Thériault. The province’s minimum wage has risen 30 per cent since 2003 when it was $7.30, while the consumer price index has gone up 13 per cent,.

More than 292,000 workers will benefit from the change, especially women who make up 183,000 of that number. Ninety per cent of workers receiving minimum wage in Quebec work in the private sector.
