Most bosses like Santa, not Scrooge

Work-life balance tops wish list for 2011: Poll

One-half of Canadians believe their boss has been more like Santa than Scrooge this past year, according to a poll by Monster Canada. However, 30 per cent describe their boss as more Scrooge-like.

"Bosses recognize their staff have worked extra hard through the ups and downs of the economy and want to reward them with a well-deserved break from work over the holidays,” said Peter Gilfillan, senior vice-president of international sales and general manager at Monster Canada.

And most workers will do just that, as 79 per cent of 1,013 Canadians (547 employed) surveyed plan to take time off during the holidays. While 48 per cent have no plans to do any work until they return to their job, about 31 per cent said they will be checking in from time to time or making themselves available if the boss calls.

Many (57 per cent) said they don't believe technology is like a digital leash, chaining them to the office, but 38 per cent of Canadians said email, laptops and cellphones make it harder to escape.

However, work-life balance tops the holiday wish list, found Monster Canada, as 38 per cent of Canadians said better balance is their number one career goal for 2011, followed by a bigger pay cheque (29 per cent), more vacation time (13 per cent) and landing a new job (nine per cent).
