Ontario proposes 3 new caregiver leaves
TORONTO — The Ontario government has proposed three new unpaid, job-protected leaves for caregivers. A family caregiver leave would allow up to eight weeks of leave for employees to provide care to a family member with a serious medical condition. A critically ill child-care leave would allow up to 37 weeks to care for a critically ill child. And a crime-related child death and disappearance leave would allow up to 52 weeks for parents of a missing child and up to 104 weeks for parents of a child who has died as a result of a crime.
B.C. unveils pooled pension plans
VICTORIA — British Columbia has introduced a Pooled Registered Pension Plans Act that would make all workers in the province eligible to enrol in defined contribution (DC) pension plans. Two-thirds of B.C. workers do not have access to group pension plans. Employer enrolment in these plans would be optional and if an employer chooses to offer a pooled registered pension plan (PRPP) to employees, workers would be automatically enrolled and have the right to opt out. Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan are looking to pass similar PRPP legislation.
