Nurses wanted

Saskatchewan doubles recruitment target to 800

Saskatchewan is stepping up its efforts to recruit and retain nurses by creating a provincial nursing mentorship program and providing more funds for professional development and the assessment of internationally educated nurses.

"Keeping and attracting nurses is a top priority of this government as part of our plan to reduce wait lists and improve access to services," said Health Minister Len Taylor in a statement.

The government is investing an additional $4 million into its recruitment grants program to double its nursing recruitment target from 400 to 800 over three years.

To help new graduates learn the ropes and get their first job, all new registered nurse and registered psychiatric nurse graduates will be guaranteed a job that pairs them with an experienced nurse mentor. The goal of the program is to help the new nurses transition to permanent jobs, while retaining older nurses at the same time.

The government will also invest $2 million in professional development and provide $300,000 to the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association to improve its capacity to assess internationally educated nurses.
