Ontario urging employers to "Give Parents a Break"

The first day of school can be stressful for parents and students alike

Employees with children starting school for the first time, or with kids going to a new school, might be a little stressed out next week as the school year kicks off.

With this in mind, the Ontario government has teamed up with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to encourage employers to find creative ways to accommodate employees whose children are starting school on Sept. 3.

“Often, both parents and students feel anxious on the first day of school,” said Elizabeth Witmer, the province’s education minister. “By giving parents a break on the first day, employers can help ease some pressure on parents and on students, making the transition easier.”

The program, called “Give Parents a Break”, is entirely voluntary. Some of the options being suggested include letting parents arrive late or leave early to be with their children.

“Peace of mind on the home front means happy, confident employees,” said Len Crispino of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “We think it makes good business sense. It helps the employee’s family and the corporate family.”

Here are a few ideas to consider:

•Let an employee arrive an hour later than usual.

•Let an employee leave earlier than usual.

•Help an employee switch shifts with another employee on that day.

•If the employee’s child is in a half-day program, be flexible about the lunch break.
