Parental leave benefits as they stand now - federal and all provincial decisions

As of December 31, the federal government brought in new legislation that makes it easier to access maternity, parental and sickness benefits under the Employment Insurance (EI) Act.

The Act also extends parental leave so that parents have more time to spend with their child.

Parental leave has been increased from 10 to 35 weeks. A combination of maternity and parental leave benefits are available for 50 weeks.

The federal government, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island have amended their employment/labour standards legislation to increase their parental leave to allow parents to take full advantage of the changes under EI.

In Quebec, the parental leave period was already 52 weeks. In the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and the Yukon, the extension of parental leave is being reviewed and may be addressed this spring.
