‘Queer Eye’ for the workplace

Designer from popular television show descending on one drab, uninspired workplace

One drab, uninspiring and unproductive workplace is going to be in for a shock.

That’s because a new contest in the United States will have Thom Filicia, one of the designers on the hit television show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, descending on an outdated workplace as part of a contest put on by Xerox and Entrepreneur Magazine.

One office will be chosen as the winner of the “Help! My Office is Obsolete” makeover contest. The winner will receive a complete office makeover, including state-of-the-technology, to create a functional workplace that drives productivity and fosters creativity.

“For those small businesses, whose top 10 expenses still include carbon paper — the blue fingerprints give it away — typewriter ribbons, and white-out, this is your opportunity to shout ‘stop,’” said Diane McGarry, Xerox chief marketing officer. “We’ll give one deserving business a colourful new look and great new technology to spark a revolution in the way they get work done.”

Filicia said it’s time to toss the traditional office aside and reveal a more stimulating workplace.

“Many offices need help escaping the conventional setup — they’re restricting, dull and impair out-of-the-box thinking,” he said. “We’ll create an invigorating place where people will want to come to work and will feel more focused, productive and creative.”

The contest is only open to American firms. Winners will be announced in November.
