Recognition trends
San Diego — Where are leading organizations taking recognition? Here are several emerging trends according to recognition expert Bob Nelson:
•shift from primarily recognizing sales to recognizing all employees;
•shift from formal to informal recognition programs;
•move from centralized to decentralized recognition programs;
•move from HR and management responsibility to all employees playing a part;
•a wider variety of recognition programs, tools and activities;
•move to a greater use of technology in tracking and rewarding performance;
•shift from logoed jewelry and crystal to lifestyle merchandise; and
•with travel, a shift away from sending top performers on trips, and saving money for a company celebration.

Firms recognize need for high performers
Scottsdale, Ariz. — Despite the economic slump, companies in the U.S. are still making an effort to recognize good employees, according to a joint survey by WorldatWork and the National Association for Employee Recognition. More than 500 companies participated and approximately 86 per cent of respondents said they have an employee recognition program in place; 62 per cent of those without a program are considering implementing one. Improving employee morale was one of the main reasons for having an employee recognition program, as cited by nine out of 10 of those surveyed.
