Reconsider new immigration rules: Coderre

The new minister for immigration says the tough new laws for immigrants should be reviewed and revised

The tough new immigration rules that were recently tabled should be reconsidered, the new immigration minister, Denis Coderre, says.

The new regulations are of concern to HR practitioners because they could seriously limit the number of potential employees entering Canada, during a time of skills shortages and brain drain to the U.S.

Coderre says that applicants, who are already in the system but get rejected because of the new rules, should get their fees back.

All interviews for mid-stream applicants were to have been completed by the end of January, but Coderre has given the committee another month to complete them.

He also asked the committee to draw up guidelines for immigration consultants. There are currently no guidelines governing how they operate.

The new entry standards that were introduced in December include a points system for newcomers to Canada. The system puts greater emphasis on education, language skills, work experience and whether the candidate has a job or family in Canada.
