Saskatchewan EI recipients drop 10.7 per cent

Province's job board has 6,700 open positions

The number of people in Saskatchewan receiving employment insurance benefits has dropped for the six straight month, according to Statistics Canada.

There were 13,000 EI beneficiaries in Saskatchewan in September, a decrease of 1,560, or 10.7 per cent, from the same month last year.

"With record employment for each of the past nine months and continued demand for skilled workers, Saskatchewan remains a place of opportunity for people here at home, across Canada and around the world," said Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Rob Norris.

"In a year where Saskatchewan's population grew by more than 16,000, we witnessed a drop in EI beneficiaries."

On a per capita basis, Saskatchewan has the second fewest number of people receiving EI benefits in Canada at two per cent.

There are also more than 6,700 jobs on Saskjobs.ca, the province's online job board, another sign of the opportunities available in Saskatchewan, said Norris.
