Saskatchewan employers can hire more electrical apprentices

Two apprentices for every journeyperson allows employers to meet labour needs: Minister

Employers in Saskatchewan will now be able to hire additional electrical trade apprentices to meet the needs of the labour market, says Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Rob Norris.

Amendments to the Electrical Licensing Exemption Regulations change the required ratio of journeypersons to apprentices in the electrical trade to be one journeyperson to two apprentices

"The need for skilled tradespersons in Saskatchewan continues to grow," said Norris. "This change will enable more people to register as apprentices, receive skills training and contribute to our growing economy."

In the past, the ratios in most trades has been one apprentice to one journeyperson. Many other designated trades in Saskatchewan already have a similar 2:1 ratio.

The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission expects apprentice numbers will grow over time as a result of this change.
