Second B.C. Wal-Mart unionizes

Despite delays shop certifies with UFCW Canada

Seven months after the majority of workers voted to unionize, a second Wal-Mart Tire and Lube Express shop in British Columbia has been certified.

The vote was originally held last September, but Wal-Mart challenged it. However, on March 3, the British Columbia Labour Relations Board authorized a count of the ballots cast by workers at two separate Wal-Mart Tire and Lube Express (TLE) shops in Surrey, B.C.

The vote at one location was 5-7 for unionization, but employees at the TLE on 88th Street voted 7-2 in favour of joining the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Canada Local 1518.

"Despite the delays forced upon these Wal-Mart workers, they are now members of our union and we couldn't be happier about that," said Brooke Sudnin, the local's president. "We will be approaching the company shortly to begin negotiations for a contract."

Last September, workers at a TLE in Cranbrook, B.C. were certified with the UFCW and negotiations for a first contract have begun. Five other Wal-Marts in Quebec have been certified as well and another application is pending in that province, as is one in Weyburn, Sask.
