Webcam use on the rise among workers: Survey

Video conferencing more effective than phone conferences and saves on travel costs

As more and more companies provide their employees with flexible work and telecommuting options, the popularity of webcams has skyrocketed as remote workers seek to maintain contact with their office colleagues, according to a survey.

More than one-half (56 per cent) of 1,035 Canadians surveyed by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Microsoft now use webcams to stay connected to friends, family and co-workers.

“Being able to see the person you’re talking to and read their facial and body language can help people communicate more effectively,” said Kimberly Moffit, psychotherapist and relationship counsellor.

The study also found:

• 79 per cent of respondents agree conducting business meetings over a webcam is more effective than a phone call

• 91 per cent agree conducting business meetings over a webcam saves companies on travel costs

• 90 per cent agree it helps employees in different locations feel more part of the team.
