Renewal agreement: Effective Jan. 1, 2019 to Dec. 31, 2023. Ratified in February 2019. Signed on March 7, 2019.

Wage adjustments:

Shift premium: 3 hours’ pay for employees in communications branch who change scheduled hours on 24 hours’ notice or less to cover staff shortage upon request of manager.

Paid holidays: 13 including 1 floater day. When Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Sunday or Monday, floater day is removed.

Vacations with pay: 2 weeks after 1 year, 3 weeks after 3 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 17 years, 6 weeks after 25 years. Upon resignation or retirement employee will be entitled to vacation with full pay or to be paid in cash, amount equal to number of days’ vacation employee normally would have been entitled to, up to termination date of that year.

Overtime: Time and one-half for all hours required to work beyond normal shift or work week. Can be banked as time off in lieu of pay. Minimum of 4 hours’ overtime pay if recalled to work. Minimum 3 hours’ pay to attend meetings during off-duty time. Employees on 24-hour shift can work maximum of 36 consecutive hours and have 24 hours off before returning.

Medical benefits: Employer pays 100% of premiums.

Dental: Employer pays 100% of premiums. $550 every 2 years (previously $500 every 2 years). Effective Jan. 1, 2022: $600 every 2 years. If employee’s glasses are lost or damaged while in performance of duties, employer will pay for replacement, maximum $550 (previously $500). Effective Jan. 1, 2022: $600.

Vision: Employer pays 100% of premiums.

Paramedical: Employer pays 100% of premiums. $825 (previously $750) for massage therapy, chiropractic coverage. Effective Jan. 1, 2022: $900. $500 for coverage of osteopathic, naturopathic, foot care by chiropodist/podiatrist, speech therapy.

Sick leave: One and one-half days per full month of employment, cumulative. Maximum 2 days per year can be used to care for ill dependent child.

AD&D: Employer pays 100% of premiums.

Life insurance: Employer pays 100% of premiums for coverage of 2 times base annual salary.

Pension: Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS).

Bereavement leave: 2, 24-hour shifts/4 working days for death of spouse, child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling. 1 24-hour shift/1 working day to attend funeral of child-in-law. 1 working day or one-half of 24-hour shift can be reserved for celebration of life ceremony or internment.

Call-in pay: Minimum 4 hours’ pay at time and one-half if called in.

Probationary period: 12 consecutive months of employment (length may be extended).

Safety shoes: 1 pair of safety shoes or boots (operations, training and fire prevention branches; 1 pair of shoes or boots (communication branch).

Uniforms/clothing: Employer supplies standard uniform: 4 pairs of dark blue fatigue trousers (operations and training branches), 4 pairs of wash-and-wear dark blue trousers (fire prevention branch), or 4 dark blue wash-and-wear daily trousers or skirts (communication branch); 4 matching dark blue shirts (operations and training branches) or 4 dark blue short- or long-sleeve dress shirts (fire prevention and communication branches); 4 dark blue short-sleeve T-shirts and 4 dark blue long-sleeve T-shirts or mock turtle necks with BFES on chest; 1 dark blue sweatshirt/work shirt with departmental ID; 1 dark blue sweater (fire prevention branch); 1 BFES chest badge; 1 dark blue ball cap with BFES logo; 1 dark blue 3-season jacket with removable insulation liner; 1 belt; 1 dress uniform tunic, 1 dress uniform cap, 2 black ties, 2 white dress uniform shirts and 2 pairs of dress uniform trousers. Operations and training personnel issue with proper clothes for firefighting duties. 1 pair of coveralls for fire prevention branch.

Mileage: Approved corporate rate for using private vehicle on corporate business, including transfers between stations after reporting for duty.

Fire prevention officer (plans examination): $56.10 rising 6 steps to $60.25

Captain/fire prevention officer/public fire and life safety officer/training officer: $55.15 rising 6 steps to $59.25

Firefighter first-class/fire inspector: $47.14 rising 6 steps to $49.79

Firefighter second-class: $42.43 rising 6 steps to $44.81

Firefighter third-class: $37.71 rising 6 steps to $39.83

Firefighter fourth-class: $33 rising 6 steps to $34.85

Firefighter fifth-class: $28.28 rising 6 steps to $29.87

Communications officer: $53.03 rising 6 steps to $59.25

Editor’s notes: Experience pay: Employees in operations, training, prevention and communication branches will be paid 3% after 8 years of service, 6% after 17 years of service, 9% after 23 years of service. Service badges: Service badges for every 5 years of full-time service. Fire college expenses: $10 per day allowance for miscellaneous items and travel allowance at rate approved by city council for use of private vehicles for 1 weekly trip while attending Ontario Fire College. On-call: 1 half-hour of pay for each day on call. Pay may be banked and taken in time off within calendar year. If not used by Dec. 31, it will be paid out. Orthopedics: Custom-made orthopaedic shoes, maximum 1 pair per year for spouses, dependants, retirees only. Custom-made orthotic inserts for shoes, maximum of $500 every 2 years for employees only.
