45 more companies sign Saskatchewan’s safety charter

Employers from Saskatoon area sign on in special ceremony

At a special signing ceremony earlier this month in Saskatoon, 45 more firms signed on the dotted line of Saskatchewan’s Health & Safety Leadership Charter, bringing the total number of signatories to about 175.

More than 150 business and community leaders, primarily from the North Saskatoon Business Association (NSBA), were present at the event on Sept. 1.

“The NSBA Board of Directors felt very strongly about the inaugural Heath & Safety Leadership Charter event on June 10 in Regina,” says Jim Nowakowski, president of the NSBA Board. “Not only were we there to sign it ourselves as an association, we wanted to do more to raise awareness to this every important issue. That’s when we started the wheels in motion to bring this message to Saskatoon, and I’m very proud of the way our membership has responded.”

The charter was unveiled at a special ceremony in Regina on June 10, when 130 employers and community leaders signed on.

The principles in the charter are adapted from the Conference Board of Canada's CEO Health and Safety Leadership Charter. (See article link below for more information on the charter.)

Signatories of the charter will gather yearly at a forum to report on progress, success and outcomes. Leaders that have chosen to be involved by signing the charter have committed to being part of the provincial movement and seeing first-hand the improved health and safety of Saskatchewan residents.

“The response and commitment that the NSBA membership has for not only this event, but this ongoing initiative, clearly shows that the NSBA is very committed to safety in the workplace and beyond,” says Keith Moen, executive director for the NSBA. “Being a good business and community leader is more than productivity and the bottom line. It’s also about providing a good, safe and smart solution to a problem that has unfortunately been prevalent in our province for a long time.”
