Alberta employers share safety expertise

Firms with exemplary safety records will mentor other organizations in the province looking to improve safety

Alberta employers with excellent safety records are being encouraged to reach out and mentor organizations looking to improve safety standards.

The mentorship program is part of the province’s Work Safe Alberta initiative. It’s co-ordinated by industry-funded safety associations and is designed to help participating employers lower workplace injury rates.

“Workplace safety is a shared responsibility of workers, industry, safety associations and government,” said Clint Dunford, Alberta’s Human Resources and Employment Minister. “Good safety practices benefit all employers and workers and the mentorship program shows both the leadership and commitment of Alberta employers to reducing workplace injuries and fatalities.”

Eleven provincial safety associations are coordinating the matching of mentors and employers in their industries.

“We think it is a fabulous program and we have had good response from our members,” added Mike Joyce of the Manufacturers' Health and Safety Association.

Employers who want to participate in the mentorship program either as a mentor or by being mentored should contact their safety association. Safety associations that wish to participate in the program should contact the Work Safe Alberta call centre at 1-866-415-8690 or online at: www.worksafely.org

The program is an industry-led initiative under Work Safe Alberta. Safety associations co-ordinate the mentorship program for each industry by matching employers willing to serve as mentors with companies that request assistance.

Alberta Human Resources and Employment (AHRE) supports the mentorship program by organizing cross-industry meetings, providing technical and statistical information, developing and printing technical materials and promoting the program to Alberta employers and workers.
