Health and safety on the farm

Ontario government planning to introduce health and safety code for agricultural workers

Farm workers in Ontario could soon be protected by new health and safety legislation.

Steve Peters, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture and Food, and Chris Bentley, the Minister of Labour, said the government is developing new health and safety standards for farmers and farm workers.

“We’re moving ahead to make the farm a safer place to live and work,” said Peters. “We are working closely with industry and will be talking with the farming community to ensure that we develop strong occupational health and safety standards, specifically designed for agriculture.”

The province is working with the Labour Issues Co-ordinating Committeee (a coalition of 14 farm and commodity groups) and the Farm Safety Association to set up standards that would embrace the principles of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, said Bentley.

“Our people’s health is our most precious resource,” he said. “Improving health and safety in all Ontario workplaces is a key priority… this initiative with the farming community is an important step toward achieving this goal.”
