High school vice-principal wins N.L. safety award

Students also honoured for video, radio work by province’s Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission

A high school vice-principal has been awarded the inaugural health and safety educator award from the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission of Newfoundland and Labrador (WHSCC).

Fraser Drover, vice-principal at Menihek High School in Labrador City, N.L., promoted a culture of health and safety through his work on programs and courses at the school. He also recruited motivational speakers, and worked with other community organizations to improve workplace health and safety, the commission said.

Along with the award, Drover received health and safety equipment for the school and a cash prize of $500.

WHSCC also handed out prizes to students for creating safety videos and radio announcements. Sonali Verma, of Stephenville High School in Stephenville, N.L., won the video contest. Jillian Forsey, also a student at Stephenville, won the radio advertisement contest.

The commission is now accepting nominations for the 2012 educator of the year award and the student safety contest, which features $2,000 in cash and prizes for winning students and their schools, is now open.
