Nova Scotia WCB announces 2014 employer rates

The Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) of Nova Scotia has announced assessment rates will remain relatively stable for 2014.

For the tenth consecutive year, the average rate is holding steady at $2.65 per $100 of assessable payroll.

Of the 18,800 employers covered by the WCB, 56.5 per cent will see their rate go down or stay the same and 43.5 per cent will see an increase, according to Nova Scotia’s WCB.

Workplaces focusing on developing successful return-to-work programs will continue to improve their rates.

Alberta introduces new workplace safety fines

Alberta employers and workers will soon face a new system of workplace safety fines.

Approved on Sept. 6, employers and employees can be issued on-the-spot tickets totaling up to $500 if either party is caught violating safety regulations.

The government will also be able to apply administrative penalties of up to $10,000 for “repeat non-compliers,” according to the Calgary Herald. This is the first time Alberta Occupational Health and Safety will have the capacity to issue monetary penalties.

Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan have similar systems in place.
