Manitoba reviewing Workers Compensation Act

Province looking for input from employers in first public consultations on the act in nearly 20 years

Manitoba is dusting off its Workers Compensation Act and is looking for public input on the legislation for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan said a four-person review committee has been struck and public hearings will begin starting April 14.

“It has been almost 20 years since the public was consulted about the workers compensation legislation,” said Allan. “Times change, as do the needs of the stakeholders of the compensation system. We need to hear what workers and employers have to say and address that through up-to-date legislation that is reflective of the environment we work and live in.”

The review committee includes representatives from business, labour and the public. Its mandate is to conduct a complete review of the Workers Compensation Act with input from all stakeholder groups. It will then submit a report to the provincial government.

Meeting dates, venues and written submissions will be posted on the Web site at www.wcbactreview.com. For more information about the hearings and how to register to make a presentation, call (204) 957-0024 or toll-free at (866) 868-4214.
