Manitoba schools awarded safety grants

Projects will be showcased at the 2012 Day of Mourning

Manitoba’s safe schools grant contest has awarded 10 grants of $2,000 to schools in the province to promote safe work.

The contest invited students, classrooms and schools to submit videos, songs, posters and ideas and proposals to promote safe work.

Labour and Immigration Minister Jennifer Howard said the contest was launched to encourage and educate students and youth about health and safety.

"The grants will help the participants complete innovative projects to incorporate safety in the classroom," she said.

Entries were reviewed in consultation with the minister's advisory council on workplace safety and health and the Workers of Tomorrow Safety Centre. Completed projects are to be provided to the province by Feb. 29.

Projects will be shared with other schools to increase awareness of safety and health among Manitoba's youth and showcased during the 2012 Day of Mourning activities.

"Encouraging young people to think about workplace safety and health while in the classroom will educate them about the importance of safe work practices," said Education Minister Nancy Allan.

The grant contest was launched in April 2011 to engage Manitoba's youth in the promotion of safety and health.
