Offshore helicopter safety regulations proposed

Transportation Safety Board makes recommendations after crash investigation

OTTAWA (CP) — The deaths of 17 people in the crash of a helicopter bound for an oil platform off Newfoundland has sparked some new safety proposals.

The federal government is proposing prohibiting offshore helicopter operations when weather or water conditions make ditching in the water unsafe.

Ottawa is also proposing to require that all crew members wear water immersion survival suits and carry an emergency underwater breathing apparatus for each passenger onboard.

A news release says stakeholders will have 30 days to make comments before the regulations are finalized.

The proposals are in response to recommendations the Transportation Safety Board made after it investigated the 2009 crash of Cougar Flight 491.

There was only one survivor in the crash.
