Ontario inspectors target musculoskeletal disorders

Two-month safety blitz focuses on sprains and strains in the workplace

Inspectors from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour are embarking on a two-month workplace inspection blitz targeting musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

The blitz, which runs from Sept. 15 to Nov. 15, has three goals, according to Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS), one of the province’s partners in occupational health and safety:

•enhance MSD enforcement efforts

•raise awareness of the importance of addressing MSDs

•identify prevention resources available to workplaces through their safe workplace association.

Inspectors will be looking for hazards that put employees at risk for sprains and strains. They will pay particular attention to tasks requiring workers to use their muscles to exert force to lift, push or carry items. Repetitive tasks will also be a focus of their attention, according to WSPS.
