Ontario unveils advisory council on workplace safety

9 people, representing labour and employers, appointed to province’s Prevention Council

Ontario has unveiled the makeup of its new Prevention Council that is designed to help protect workers and improve workplace health and safety across the province.

The 11-member council is made up of representatives from labour, employers, non-unionized workers and an occupational health and safety expert. (See sidebar at right for names of the council members.) Two more names will be added to the list in the near future — one employer representative and a representative from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) are currently being finalized, the province said.

George Gritziotis, Ontario’s chief prevention officer, said he is looking forward to “working closely with these prevention leaders to develop and implement a province-wide occupational health and safety strategy that will lead ultimately to safer workplaces for all workers in Ontario.”

Linda Jeffrey, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, said the group — which she called “accomplished and dynamic” — would work closely with Gritziotis to improve health and safety in all Ontario workplaces.

“Our ultimate and shared goal is to eliminate work-related injury and illness,” she said.
