Loading dock inspection video and guide to back health

Loading dock inspection video

To coincide with its blitz on loading docks, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has produced a video of what an inspector might typically look for during an inspection. The four-and-a-half-minute video shows an inspector looking for a variety of hazards. He checks for chocks for truck wheels, a driver waiting area, a dock leveler, maintenance records and inspections for lift trucks, ventilation components and carbon monoxide detectors. He also explains the importance of keeping a safe loading dock site and points out specific hazards workers should look for such as pedestrians, other workers using forklifts and other trucks.

Back to basics

The Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta has released a 20-page guide to back health. Back to Basics offers tips on preventing back pain in the workplace. It covers a wide variety of proper postures for sitting, standing and lifting, and looks at what can be done to maintain a healthy back such as good nutrition and exercise. If back pain does occur, the guide offers several solutions for dealing with it, including using hot and cold compresses, pain killers and alternative treatment. It also outlines best practices for recovery from back pain and how to determine when to see a doctor.
