Revised list for occupational exposure limits released

WorkSafeBC consulting with stakeholders on implementation issues with new list

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has released its yearly list of substances with new or revised threshold limit values (TLV).

A TLV is an exposure limit — the suggested maximum allowed airborne concentration for a substance where nearly all workers are believed to experience no adverse health effects over a working lifetime, according to WorkSafeBC.

TLVs may be an eight-hour time weighted average, short term exposure limit or ceiling limit, the organization said.

WorkSafeBC will now consult stakeholders about potential implementation issues before the adoption of the new list. Until the board of the organization makes decisions about what new or revised TLVs are going to be adopted, the existing occupational exposure limits (OELs) remain.

WorkSafeBC is requesting stakeholder feedback on the proposed new or revised OELs for the following substances:

Substances with OEL changes (some with notation changes):

Acetic anhydride

Carbon black

Ethyl benzene

Maleic anhydride

Methyl isopropyl ketone

2,4-Pentanedione

4,4’-Thiobis(6-tert-butyl-m-cresol)

Substances with notation changes (no OEL changes):

Allyl chloride

Methylacrylonitrile

Substance to be withdrawn:

Soapstone
